Port Townsend Demographics
Port Townsend, Jefferson County, is one of only three designated Historic Seaport Towns in the U.S., the other two are located on the East Coast. Lighthouse Center is located on Sims Way/State Hwy 20 within blocks between the Washington State Ferry Terminal and Historic Downtown to the east and the Port of Port Townsend and main marina to the west. All ferry and downtown traffic passes in front of Lighthouse Center. The ferries connect the Olympic Peninsula with Whidbey Island, Bellingham and Canada with two new larger ferries Lighthouse Center is next to several motels including the Tides Inn and Port Townsend Motels and within walking distance to all areas downtown and on the waterfront.
Local demographics show the average age to be 54 years old with the second highest average income in the State derived primarily from retirement and investment resources. An estimated 75 million dollars in retail and service leakage bought outside of the County illustrates the opportunities locally to create needed products and services not now available.
Tourism is the largest income generator with 1,500,000 tourists a year visiting the picturesque city and county. Centrum, the Foundation for the Arts, brings folks from all over the country to a variety of workshops and musical events including Writer’s Conferences, Fiddle Tunes, Blues and a host of other offerings throughout the year. The new $15,000,000. Maritime Center a few blocks from Lighthouse Center provides education and sailing programs for all ages including navigation, boat building and on the water sail craft. It is also a symbol of the second largest income producer in the area, boat building and maintenance with a full service port for private and government vessels.
The lively waterfront that once saw 80 large sailing schooners anchored in Port Townsend Bay in front of saloons and dry goods businesses now welcome small cruise ships, private yachts, and all sorts of watercraft visiting the many excellent restaurants, galleries and tasteful shops. Visitors coming by land enjoy boutique hotels, B&B’s and waterfront motels located near Lighthouse Center.
